Guidance

The three guidelines we follow at FUNSHINE are:
Take care of yourself — Take care of others — Take care of our thingsTime out is rarely used at FUNSHINE as it does not teach appropriate or successful negotiating, conflict and social skills, so we use the following guidance techniques:

• Provide a setting using good examples, role modeling and responsible behavior
• Anticipate and eliminate potential conflicts
• Set age-appropriate boundaries and limits
• Use natural and logical consequences
• Removing privileges
• Offer choices and explanations
• Redirect towards a more acceptable behavior
• Encourage good behavior by using positive reinforcement and small rewards

We encourage the children to settle disputes between themselves to practice conflict management but closely monitor each situation and assist by helping them find the right words to express their feelings, intervene if there is a potential for physical contact, and use these experiences as learning opportunities.
